Mechanical Exfoliation

Mechanical exfoliation techniques involve the use of a tool (brush or sponge) and/or a topical abrasive, such as oatmeal, corn cob meal, or date seed powder. Natural estheticians often use rice seeds and bran, both of which have been used to relieve inflammation and cleanse and soften the skin.

Skin brushing with a salt glow or a body scrub using coffee grounds or sugar are also popular methods of mechanically exfoliating. Gentler ingredients, such as spherical jojoba beads, are generally used on more sensitive areas, such as the face.

The amount of pressure applied or the amount of time spent performing the service will depend on the degree to which the skin is exfoliated and the dead skin cells are sloughed off in the process.

Chemical Exfoliation

Chemical exfoliation utilizes one or more of the following agents to effectively remove dead skin cells and stimulate skin rejuvenation. Chemical exfoliants can be found in various forms such as gels, creams, lotions, and cleansers. Due to their ability to induce a mild chemical peel, they are frequently referred to as chemical peels, peel treatments, or retexturing peels.

Hydroxy Acids: Including lactic acid, salicylic acid, and glycolic acid, play a crucial role in promoting normal cell turnover in the epidermis, stimulating the cell cycle and encouraging the growth of new skin cells.

There are two primary types of hydroxy acids: alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) and beta hydroxy acids (BHAs). Both function by removing the outer layer of skin and promoting cellular turnover. However, AHAs are water-soluble and do not penetrate the skin as deeply, while BHAs are oil-soluble and can penetrate the skin more profoundly.

In general, AHAs are excellent for eliminating dead skin cells and brightening the skin’s appearance, while BHAs are more effective at unclogging pores. Both AHAs and BHAs can be incorporated into weekly exfoliating routines.

AHAs encompass a variety of acids derived from nuts, milk, sugars, and fruits, including:

Glycolic Acid: Derived from fruit, glycolic acid is one of the most common AHAs and is often effective at controlling oil production.

Lactic Acid: Derived from milk and sugars, lactic acid provides a gentler exfoliation compared to glycolic acid.

Citric Acid: Derived from citrus fruits and corn, citric acid is often used to brighten the skin.

Malic Acid: Derived from apples and green grapes, malic acid is suitable for sensitive skin types.

Mandelic Acid: Derived from bitter almonds, mandelic acid is gentle on sensitive skin, boasts antibacterial properties, and is ideal for acne control.

Tartaric Acid: Derived from grapes and cranberries, tartaric acid is used as an antioxidant.

One of the most common BHAs is salicylic acid, sourced from willow tree bark, sweet birch, and wintergreen oil. Salicylic acid penetrates the skin’s oil to clear follicles, preventing and treating acne. It is generally less irritating than some AHAs.

Retinol (Vitamin A): is another important component of exfoliation formulas. When applied to the skin, retinol is converted into retinoic acid, a potent skin exfoliation and anti-aging agent. Regular use of retinol has been shown to improve visible signs of photo-aging and normal aging.

Enzymes like papain, bromelain, and protease enzymes have biological origins and work to soften the skin, dissolve cellular debris, and remove the top layer of dead skin cells. Activated by water, enzymes have limitations in the extent of exfoliation they can achieve. These enzymes are typically derived from various fruits and plants, such as pumpkin, pineapple, and papaya.
